  1. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
    Government-owned telecom service provider.

  2. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL)
    Operates telecom services in Mumbai and Delhi; subsidiary of BSNL.

  3. ITI Limited (Indian Telephone Industries Limited)
    India’s first PSU; manufactures telecom equipment.

  4. Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL)
    Engineering and consultancy company providing telecom and IT services globally.


๐Ÿงช Research & Development Institutions

  1. Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) – New Delhi & Bangalore
    Telecom technology development center of the Government of India.

  2. Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) – New Delhi
    Technical wing of DoT; responsible for telecom standardization, specifications, and testing.


๐Ÿ› Statutory / Autonomous Bodies

  1. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
    Regulates telecom services, tariffs, and consumer interests.

  2. Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT)
    Handles disputes related to telecom, broadcasting, and IT.

  3. Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF)
    Funds rural and remote area telecom services.

  4. Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) – [Merged with BSNL in 2023]
    Originally responsible for BharatNet, a rural broadband project.

๐Ÿข Key Units & Services

  1. India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)
    Payments bank operated by India Post to promote financial inclusion.

  2. Postal Life Insurance (PLI) & Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI)
    Government-backed life insurance services.

  3. CEPT (Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology) – Mysuru
    Handles IT operations and technology development for India Post.



๐Ÿ”ฌ RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTIONS


✅ 1. Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL) – R&D Wing

  • Engaged in development and consultancy for rural broadband, smart city solutions, IoT applications.


✅ 2. Centre for Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) – Chennai

  • Joint initiative between IIT Madras and the Government of India (supported by DoT/C-DOT).

  • Focus on advanced wireless communication systems, 5G, 6G, spectrum policy research.


✅ 3. Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate

  • Though under MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and IT), it supports telecom equipment testing, EMI/EMC, and cybersecurity standards that DoT leverages.


✅ 4. Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE)

  • A public-private partnership between the DoT, academia, and industry.

  • Located at various IITs and IISc (e.g., IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay).

  • Supports research in AI for telecom, rural connectivity, spectrum efficiency, etc.


✅ 5. National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS)

  • A newer unit under DoT, focusing on cyber security in telecom infrastructure.


⚠️ Note:

While C-DOT and TEC are directly under the Ministry of Communications, some collaborative R&D work happens through partnerships with:

  • IITs and IISc

  • SAMEER (under MeitY) for RF & microwave

  • CDAC (under MeitY) for embedded telecom systems
